Barry Sanders - A Brief Biography
Dr Barry Sanders is iCORE Chair of Quantum Information Science and Director of the Institute for Quantum Information Science at the University of Calgary. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Calgary in 1984 and then completed a Diploma of Imperial College under the supervision of Professor T. W. B. Kibble. Subsequently he completed a PhD at Imperial College under the supervision of Professor Sir Peter Knight at Imperial College. Following completion of the PhD in 1987, he was a postdoctoral research fellow under the supervision of Professor Gerard Milburn, first at the Australian National University and then at the University of Queensland, and also under the supervision of Professor Crispin Gardiner who was then at the University of Waikato. Dr. Sanders joined the Physics Department of Macquarie University in 1991 and was there for 12 years, including 6.5 years as Department Head, before moving to Calgary in 2003.
Dr Sanders is especially well known for seminal contributions to theories of quantum-limited measurement, highly nonclassical light, practical quantum cryptography, and optical implementations of quantum information tasks. His current research interests include quantum resources and algorithms and also optical and atomic implementations of quantum information tasks and protocols. Recently Dr Sanders has developed research activities in quantum processes in biological systems and also on machine learning approaches to quantum control.
Dr. Sanders is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (U.K.), the Optical Society of America, the Australian Institute of Physics, the American Physical Society, and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. He is a past President of the Australian Optical Society, former Secretary-Treasurer of the American Physical Society Topical Group on Quantum Information, Chair of the Canadian Association of Physicists Division of Atomic and Molecular Physics and Photonic Interactions, a member of the American Institute of Physics Education Advisory Committee, and an editorial board member for Physical Review A, New Journal of Physics, Optics Communications, and Applied Mathematics and Information Sciences. He also serves the Optical Society of America as Leader of the Quantum Optical Science and Technology Technical Group. In addition, Dr. Sanders serves on numerous conference committees for the American Physical Society, the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), the Optical Society of America, and international quantum information conferences.
